8/27 Chowan Team Trail Event Canceled–Input Needed

Message from Chuck Murray – NCBFN President

Guys, I think we need to play it safe on this one. Based on the wind models, it looks like Edenton will see 35-57 mph winds which makes it extremely dangerous. If it shifts 50 miles, we would be in DEEP TROUBLE with almost Hurricane Force wind, So we will CANCEL this tourney for Saturday at the Chowan. One alternative is to move it west such as Kerr but I think it is probably too late to do such a move plus, if it shifts, more trouble. I am sure now that we are canceling it, the weather will be great! (lol) .

This is going to be a hard tourney to make up before the CLASSIC on Gaston Lake on 10/8 and 10/9. I have already got the trophies made etc.., so the CLASSIC is all set!! September 10th is the only time available and I do not know yet which ramp will be available. So I am going to put this out and each person and await your responses will count toward the tally and the most popular is what we will do.

1. Reschedule tourney to 9/10 on the Chowan. Ramp to be determined. The only issue here is a lot of you are fishing the Greenville Marine Classic and there is not much practice time left and there is a BFL that day.

2. Change the format of the Classic. On the Classic dates, Day one will replace this tourney (10/8) and Day 2 (10/9) will be the Classic Championship.

3. Schedule the make up tourney on a Friday, Maybe 9/1 (labor day weekend) (Saturday is dove day!) or 9/9.

Proposed Changes to the Hunting, Fishing, Gamelands Rules for 2012-13

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC) has published proposed changes to the 2012-13 hunting, fishing, and gamelands rules and has provided the opportunity for public comment on the website below:

https://ncpaws.org/PAWS/WRC/PublicComments/PublicEntry/PublicComments.aspx

When you go to this website, you will be able to access the Public Hearings Booklet for your ready reference to all the proposed changes along with the justification for each proposal. The Booklet contains much valuable information about the agency, its rulemaking procedures, the schedule of public hearings across the state, the proposed rule changes, and a calendar for seasons as proposed for the 2012-13 seasons.
There are 26 proposed changes to the fishing rules ranging from changes to designated trout waters in the mountains, for largemouth and striper fishing, to allow cross bows to take nongame fish statewide, and to establish primary nursery areas in some inland waters of coastal areas.
There are 29 proposed changes to the hunting and gamelands rules including extending some either sex deer hunting seasons and opening new areas or lengthening bear hunting seasons both in the mountains and coastal plain counties. Also proposed are changes to the rules to allow hunting feral swine year around without limit or reporting, allow possession of handguns under concealed carry permits on gamelands, authorize use of a 22 caliber rim-fire handgun to dispatch wounded deer under the new law for retrieval of game. One proposal seeks comment on opening the Sherwood and Harmon Den Bear Sanctuary to raccoon, opossum, and bobcat hunting. Another proposal asks for comment on the extension of deer hunting with muzzle loader firearms and bow and arrow on Sandhills Gamelands from the third Monday after Thanksgiving week through January 1.
Plan to attend the public hearings in the area nearest to you in September; but, you may also want to review the proposals and comment on the ones that you support or oppose using this convenient, on-line tool offered by the WRC.

Angler uses own life lessons to motivate others

Source: newsobserver.com

By: Terri Saylor – Correspondent

Clay Dyer

Clay Dyer’s greatest fishing challenge has nothing to do with his physical disabilities. Even though he was born without legs and a left arm, Dyer uses his partial right arm to perfect a fishing technique that has landed him in the ranks of the top bass fishermen in the country.

He just hasn’t figured out how to read a fish’s mind.

“Figuring out how to overcome that challenge is really the hard part,” he said. “I have a lot of equipment and tools. It boils down to making the right choices. It’s all mental. You read the conditions. You have the knowledge of what the fish are supposed to do, but they have a mind of their own and a brain the size of a peanut, and they can either make you look like a champion or look like an idiot.”

Dyer, 33, has been looking like a champion most of his life.

He believes he is living proof that with faith and perseverance, anyone can be successful and overcome adversity.

That is the message he plans to convey to an audience Saturday night, when he delivers the keynote address at the Ridgecrest Outdoorsmen Banquet at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham.

Dyer lives in the town in which he grew up, Hamilton, Ala., where he dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. While helping his grandfather with chores around the family catfish farm, he discovered a talent for angling, and through that he has realized his dream career in professional sports.

Along the way, his friends and family helped him uncover a flair for public speaking, and he has become successful at that too.

“I had about a thousand people, it seemed, trying to talk me into pursuing a career in motivational speaking when I was in high school,” he said. “I had never seen myself doing that, but I did it and started liking it, and I had an opportunity to make a living doing it.”

At his peak a couple of years ago, Dyer was on the road 250 days of the year, speaking to church groups and outdoorsmen and at corporate events and fishing. He has since scaled back to fewer than 10 speaking engagements per month. And even though he last fished with the FLW Outdoors Tour in 2009, FLW executives tout his attitude and his abilities.

“Clay is simply one of the most amazing people to ever fish an FLW Outdoors tournament and a true inspiration to everyone he meets,” said Kathy Fennel, president of FLW Outdoors’ operations division. “His incredible talent with a rod and reel is matched only by his enthusiastic attitude and unwavering determination to succeed. He is a winner every time he takes to the water and a wonderful example for anyone trying to overcome obstacles in their life.”

Dyer looks forward to getting back on the tournament circuit in the 2012 season.

“I need to focus my efforts on activities I want to be the best at,” he said. “I want to be the best I can be and improve my skills. Most people will tell you that when I’m pitching at my best, I can beat anyone, and then there are days I can’t fight my way out of a wet paper bag.”

Still, he perseveres, and that is the message he takes to his audiences.

“In this day and time, there is so much negativity, people dealing with obstacles in their lives and adversity,” he said. “I’m living proof that if you have faith in God and perseverance, you can be successful and overcome adversity. I deliver a message of hope for people.”

Dyer was about 7 and had already been fishing for two years when he started noticing his body was different from other kids’ bodies.

“But rather than concentrate on things I can’t do, I have always focused on things I can do,” he said. “My friends like to say, ‘Don’t tell Clay he can’t do something, or he’ll prove to you that he can,’ and I will. I will literally come to blood and tears to prove I can do something.”

Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, a professional angler with the Bassmaster Elite Series, knows Dyer from fishing shows in which they participate throughout the U.S..

“Clay is a great guy. He’s always happy, and the way he has overcome his situation, having no arms and legs, is unbelievable,” Wilks said. “The rest of us struggle with day-to-day things, and it makes you feel petty to complain about little things when he has overcome so much.”

Watching videos of Dyer fishing would make a believer out of most anyone.

With a fishing rod and reel tucked between his chin and collarbone, Dyer swings his entire body to cast his line, and he uses his upper right arm to reel in his catch. Using his chin and teeth, he can thread a lure balanced on that right arm.

“Without having hands and fingers, I had to learn to do it the way that I could do it and be efficient,” he said.

In fishing, if efficiency had a physical image, it might just look like Clay Dyer.

MLF – Major League Fishing for TV coming soon!

Story: Bassfan.com

Duckett_Boyd_11_deck_370_DF

Boyd Duckett said Major League Fishing will try to capture three key components of the sport for TV viewers – competition, emotion and characters.

Does competitive bass fishing have the potential to become a nationwide TV phenomenon like poker did a few years back? Boyd Duckett and a couple dozen other top anglers believe it does, and that premise is the foundation behind the long-rumored new venture hatched by the 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion and successful businessman.

Hydrilla surfaces in Kerr Lake

Story from WRAL.com

Henderson, N.C. — A fast-growing aquatic weed is causing headaches for some property owners along Kerr Lake.

The weed hydrilla has been a nuisance in Kerr Lake in recent years but sprang up with a vengeance around docks and shores last year, said Paul McKenzie, agricultural agent for Vance and Warren counties.

Hydrilla is concentrated in the lake from north of Clarksville, Va., to around Nutbush in Vance County.

Hydrilla can cover the surface of small bodies of water, like coves and shallow areas along the shore. The weed’s stems can grow up to 25 feet long, making it impossible to boat, swim or fish.

The invasive weed plagues lakes from Florida to Connecticut and west to California and Washington.

McKenzie said that Kerr Lake homeowners can have a professional treat it with the chemical Komeen.

Chuck Murray and Randy Groves win at Gaston

Chuck Murray and Randy Groves of the Sandy Creek Bass Masters had a great catch on Gaston Lake this weekend. Chuck and Randy brought 7 fish to the scales weighing 24.38 pounds besting the field by over 4 pounds. Chuck and Randy said the bite was tough early as they did not catch a keeper fish until 8:30am. “The day started out pretty tough Chuck said. We went to some of our best top water stuff and really nothing. Then we had some boat trouble and it took us about 30 minutes to figure out how to get the motor cranked. Somehow we kicked a breaker. We finally settled down and the second fish we caught was a 4.5 pounder on a stump about 6ft, so we went to a stretch that has about 5 big stumps in a turn near the channel and caught our limit in no time. It turned out to be a great day after all.

Jay Wright and Ricky Ballance of the Sandy Creek Bass Masters had a great catch as well with 7 bass weighing 20.04 pounds. Jay and Ricky were very excited and reported they caught about 30 fish during the day and stated they lost a couple of good fish or they would have given Chuck and Randy a run for the money. They reported catches on top water baits, senkos and jigs. Andy Evans and Brent Boyette had a great catch as well and took third with 17.70 lbs and reported their catch came on the world famous white Senko and shaky heads. We believe the shaky head but the white senko?

Fourth Place went to the local Father and Son duo of Adam and Gene Richardson with 7 fish weighing 17.07 pounds. Mike Higgins and Nate Ramous took 5th place with 7 bass weighing16.46 pounds.

Big Bass Honors:
Mercury Big BASS Award – Phil Bain and Tim Wiltfong 5.54 lbs
Triton Big BASS Award- Jay Wright and Ricky Ballance – 4.77 pounder

The $1,000 Points Championship Race is still tight after with two tourneys remaining. 1st place belongs to Chuck Murray and Randy Groves with a total of 276 points, Ricky Balance and Jay Wright are in 2nd place at 272, Andy Evans and Brent Boyette are in third with 264, Cory Leonard and Scott Smith are in 4th with 257 and Wesley Cashwell and Flash Butts are in 5th place with 246. Mike Higgins and Nate Ramous are tied for 6th place with Phil Bain and Tim Wiltfong.

The total pounds race is tight as well. Chuck Murray and Randy Groves hold a very small lead with 54.15 lbs, Jay Wright and Ricky Balance – 49.64 lbs, Mike Higgins and Nate Ramous are in 3rd with 41.78 lbs, Cory Leonard and Scott Smith are in 4th with 41.61 and Andy Evans and Brent Boyette are in 5th at 40.96 lbs. Total Weight Champions receive $250. The largest catch weighed now belongs to Chuck Murray and Randy Groves with 24.38 pounds caught at Gaston Lake this weekend. The team with the largest one day weight wins $100.

Next Tourney is August 27th on the Chowan River launching from NC HWY 17 Bridge (Eden House Ramp).

Slow Down – Use Caution At Bridges

Two injured in boat/bridge collision during tournament event

Shinichi Fukae Acident

FLW Tour pro Shinichi Fukae and his tournament event cameraman were injured when their boat struck the concrete pillar of a highway bridge on Kentucky Lake during a recent tournament event.

Please slow down and use extra caution at bridges during your future outings on the water. Not only do bridges create an obstacle for you to navigate around safely, they may also obstruct your view of oncoming boats, potentially causing a boat-to-boat collision.
